Back To School Tips For Teachers: 8 Simple Steps and Storage Containers to Help Organize Your Classroom

BACK TO SCHOOL - STORAGE CONTAINERS - TEACHER ORGANIZATION

"You can't organize clutter." You've got to get rid of it. That's what it all comes down to. That's what *Marla Cilley declares on her website, in her books, videos and daily reminder emails. Marla Cilley, aka "Flylady" has been "FLY-ing" for years and sharing her experience with others of living clutter and chaos free -- whether it's at home, at the office or in the classroom. The term "FLY-ing" stands for "Finally Loving Yourself".

Flylady teaches stay-at-home-parents, teachers, children, educators, doctors, lawyers, nurses -- anyone willing to listen and learn -- how to get rid of clutter for good, one step at a time ( but no more than 15 minutes at a time!), and enjoy life peacefully (not perfectly!). She makes the steps simple and fun for everyone.

Here, I'm going to share with you 8 simple steps for teachers (scroll down) -- whether you're teaching Pre-K, Grade School, Middle School, High School or beyond -- to help keep your classroom organized and clutter-free. These steps apply to anyone and can be used anywhere.

It's important to remember that you cannot organize clutter - you have to get rid of those items that are in your way, useless, not helpful and are only cluttering up your space, your time, your mind and your energy.

As teachers, you know how important it is to stay focused on your students - if you're spending your time moving clutter from one spot to another, you're zapping energy you could otherwise be using to help your students.

8 Simple Steps for Teachers on How to Declutter Your Classroom

8 Simple Steps for Teachers on How to Declutter Your Classroom

1. Get rid of the clutter:

- Take up to 15 minutes each day to declutter an area. Flylady suggests tossing out up to 27 items (pencils, scraps of paper, Popsicle sticks, torn folders, dried out markers, etc) each day if needed. Keeping "hotspots" clear of piles of papers, stacks of books, newsletters, pieces of mail, report cards, letters from parents, etc.

2. Helpful Items to help get rid of clutter:

- Garbage bags, boxes, magic markers, dust rag.

3. Label the boxes to donate, toss or put away.

4. Set a timer for 15 minutes and begin at the entrance of your classroom, working your way around back to the entrance.

5. If it doesn't make you or your students smile, decide whether to donate or toss it.

6. When done, get rid of the garbage (tie it up, toss it out immediately).

7. Tape up the "Donate" box, put it in your car and drop it at the donation box on your way home.

8. Now you're left with a "Put Away" box of items that make you and your students smile! It's time to put them away where they belong! Your students can help with this!
