Environmental Plastic... Jars and Caps from Parkway Plastics

Posted by

Did you know that efficient plastic packaging today reduces food waste and help improve the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption?

The American chemistry council recently released a new study named “Plastics and sustainability”on the environmental effect of plastics. The team behind the study comes from the same firm that completed a large study for the UN in 2014, and says have used the same methodology applied to that study. New findings from the research explain that the environmental cost of using plastics in consumer goods and packaging is nearly four times less than replacing plastics with alternative materials!”(“UCC Report 2016”, cited in Loepp, Plastics News - Aug. 8.)

This is not only good news for all plastic jar manufacturers out there, but it is also a good encouragement for business owners who’ve doubted plastics, and earlier consider changing packaging materials…. to become more environmental! Isn’t that funny! Based on this recent study, you’re nicer towards the environment if you remain in plastics.

One reason why plastics are better for sustainability and for the environment is because plastics retain certain freshness when your product gets packaged. This helps control waste, which in itself is a measurement for sustainability. This is the reason why you often see plastics with produce as it extends the shelf life of vegetables and foods, your eatables basically last longer with plastics compared to other packaging materials.

The report touches on environmental costs and Loepp explains that “if all the plastic packaging and consumer products could be replaced with traditional materials – like glass, tin or aluminum – that would actually increase the environmental costs from $139 billion to $533 billion.” Things taken into account when summing up environmental costs included: ocean damage, end-life management, shipping and transport, production, material and energy recovery costs.
