5 Quick and Easy Steps to Create a Unique Plastic Jar Luminary for Martin Luther King Day - #MLK

Every year, on the third Monday of January, we celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. This time of year falls around King’s birthday, January 15.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist who called for nonviolent activism and spoke out against racial discrimination. He dedicated his life working for peace and justice for everyone, no matter the color of their skin or what their faith was.

People all around the world find various ways of honoring and celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s life -- some attend parades or poetry readings, others participate in community service and volunteer their time and talent.

We found a creative way to honor MLK Day using our plastic jars. You can make your own following these quick and easy steps:

1. Gather plastic jars of various sizes.

2. Fill an inch of the bottom of each plastic jar with sand or beads.

3. Place a tealight or an LED votive candle in the center of each jar.

4. Decorate the plastic jar using a permanent maker. You can write

quotes by Martin Luther King Jr. on the outside and/or create a

collage by inserting photos on the inside of the jar.

5. Display your weather-proof luminaries along your outdoor 

path or place one on each step of your stairway.
