We'd like to introduce the newest intern in Parkway Plastic’s Engineering Department, Chris Golm! At Parkway, he will be working in and with our tool room and engineering departments creating models for jar molds using SolidWorks, a computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided engineering (CAE) program used for creating 3D CAD images of our molds and mold parts for Simulation, Visualization, Product data management and Rendering purposes.

On his off hours, the 20-year-old student of Rutgers School of Engineering (Piscataway, NJ), along with a group of team members, spends his time building race cars from scratch as part of the student-run Rutgers Formula Racing program. Rutgers Formula Racing was established in 1989. Throughout the years, the team has won numerous accolades in Formula SAE: from Top-20 finishes and design awards to Rutgers society commendations. 

Golm is part of the design team, in which he and his team members are responsible for the controls and ergonomics. Golm works specifically on the pedal box, seat, steering dash and shifting.

This will be Golm’s third year participating – each car takes a full year to build, design and test. These cars are then entered into the Formula North international race car competition.

The race cars this year will be judged at the competition being held in Barrie, Ontario. There are 3 days of events (both static and dynamic), with the final endurance event taking place on June 3, 2018.

In short, students must convince judges that their automobile is worth purchasing, meeting requirements that include “ … low in cost, easy to maintain and reliable … ” as well as “the car’s marketability [being] enhanced by other factors such as aesthetics, comfort and use of common parts.”

Golm, a rising senior, has competed in two previous competitions (2016, 2017). A friend of Golm’s had invited him to participate in the non-credit, extracurricular program. The team consists of 35 members total and has worked together to create race cars that have won 6^th overall and 3^rd place in the big endurance event.

Last year’s race events had 120 teams from around the world competing. This year it’s a much smaller turnout with only 30 teams participating, but the excitement is still the same.

Rutgers Formula Racing, established in 1989, looks forward to celebrating its 30^th anniversary, where team members from previous and current years will unite and make connections. RFR has produced alumni whose careers thrive in such industries as automotive, aerospace, defense, machining, and athletic equipment. The unique design, manufacturing, and leadership opportunities offered in this program provide members of all majors and years the tools, interpersonal skills, and practice needed to compete in the modern technology job market.
