5. Moisturizers – Day and Night Creams

As a product developer or business owner in the skin care / beauty market, you know that every woman needs a good day cream and night cream - whether she's 25, 40 or 65 years old. 

Moisturizers in beauty, health and skincare markets consist of a variety of products, most claiming to tackle dull skin and boost radiance. Moisturizing products include Day Creams, Night Creams, Masks, Serums, Lotions, and Body Butters. The importance of a  facial hydration moisturizer goes beyond what the general Joe (or Jill) might know. 25, 40 or 65 years old, a good moisturizer is essential for your face. It protects your skin regardless of your age, whether you need moisture to prevent wrinkles, dryness, or acne. In this first blog post on moisturizers, we're covering the two products every woman should have at home: a day cream & a night cream. Not only will we talk about the benefits these bring, but we will also go over what you should know when you are packaging these products in cosmetic containers and jars. 

Day Creams

Day creams tend to vary from water/gel based creams, to more complexed formulas with different enzymes for anti-wrinkle treatments. What makes a day cream a day cream is that the day cream should contain SPF for sun protection. In addition to a lightweight formula for hydration, the day cream acts as protection and support for the skin against UV rays, pollution, and environmental conditions that can cause damage to the skin. The day cream is the first layer on the skin after cleansing and should give the skin the support it needs under makeup. When applied, the day cream provides a smooth surface for makeup application and lets the skin breathe even under cosmetics. Alpha-hydroxy acids and Retinoids are barely-to-never used in day creams because they tend to increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun. 

Night creams

What distinguishes a night cream from a day cream is the absence of sunscreen. Much like the day cream, the night cream contains moisture for the skin to absorb, but in a richer and thicker formula. A good night cream, however, is powerful with its slow-absorbing moisturizing formula designed to penetrate layers of skin over the course of 8 hours of sleep. It usually includes a higher dose of vitamins, for instance, Vitamin C, E and H, and minerals such as Magnesium and Calcium. These "extras" are added to restore, renew, and rebuild the skin overnight when it rests. Some anti-aging compounds that make our skin sensitive to the sun are in some cases added to night creams.

          So if you, for example, would love to add a special anti-aging compound to your Day Cream, and later find out that it's SUN SENSITIVE, you should instead add the compound to your Night Cream! Our skin does its repairing during the hours we sleep, and that's why a good night cream is important - full of vitamins, minerals, and hydration.
Some night creams include Hyaluronic acid for extra moisture but all formulas vary of course, that you know!
