Sugaring and waxing: What's the difference anyway?

Posted by

Body Sugaring

Sugaring is a method of hair removal that dates back to ancient Egyptian times. It is said that the women of that time would use lemon juice, sugar and water to create a sticky wax-like mixture to get rid of unwanted body hair. Today, that recipe still remains and is used by organic body care enthusiasts all over the world. Sugar gel, sugar paste, Arabian wax, persian wax are other ways of referring to body sugar. Its thick toffee-like consistency is typically used for hair removal on larger areas of the body like: legs, arms, and back. Sugar pastes are applied to the skin at a lukewarm temperature and can be molded and manipulated to control how much hair is removed at a time.

Other facts about sugaring are:

  • You can make it at home
  • Made using natural ingredients
  • Muslin Epilator Strip use is optional
  • Edible
  • Temperature of sugar is lukewarm
  • Can be heated
  • Water soluble

Now lets talk about the other way to reduce the look of regrowth.. Waxing!

Body Waxing

Traditional waxing is a semi-permanent hair remover that takes the hair from the root using a resin based wax. This century old hair removal system is used for small areas of the body such as the face, eyebrows, chin and underarms and large areas such as the legs, chest, and back. The chemical based mixture is made out of a thick liquid substance (resin) that creates a hard wax. Then hard wax is melted in a warmer and most times applied to the skin on a muslin strip; although there are waxes that are strip-less. These waxes aren't as pliable as sugar pastes and do not mold into different shapes. Their consistency can be compared to honey. It is applied to the skin and removed with muslin strips. Generally speaking, in order for the wax to work, the professionals heat the body wax to a high temperature. There are heat-less waxes available but for purposes of this article the focus is on strip waxing.

More wax facts are:

  • Wax is semi permanent
  • Chemical based
  • Uses strips are used most to remove hair
  • Wax sticks to skin to remove hair root
  • Non-edible
  • Can be heated
  • Temperature of wax is hot (55-65 degrees)
  • Not soluble in water

How they compare...

The main differences of waxing and sugaring is that waxing requires melting and sugaring does not. Hard wax needs to be warmed and melted while sugar is used when its thick and at a lukewarm temperature. Sugar is rolled by hand and directly applied to the skin.

Wax is first melted to reach a honey-like consistency and applied to a muslin strip, then the skin. Wax does not dissolve in water, while sugar does. Wax are oil based products and sugar paste is made from...well, sugar. After wax oil is used to remove wax from the skin. Warm water is used to get rid of sugar left on the skin.

Another difference is how it removes the hair. Sugaring removes hair in the same direction of hair growth. Waxing removes hair in the opposite direction of hair growth.
